Abstract
This article examines orthographic variations of Ukrainian surnames in Western Pennsylvania. The discussion is based upon 1,100 Ukrainian surnames and their various American English renditions, totaling 3,000 names. The surnames, first recorded in American English at the beginning of this century, were gathered from baptismal record books, parish lists and other archival material made available in Ukrainian Orthodox churches and organizations. Each surname is compared over a period of three generations (1907-1970).
